The Search for Motivation

“He who has a why to live for can bear with almost any how.” -Nietzsche

Do you still have your new year’s inspiration? If you're like many we’ve talked to, the renewal and motivation that often comes with a new year has faded even more quickly in 2021 than the inevitable fizzle that comes with all years.

And it’s understandable. We have experienced, and are still persevering through, fundamental changes in our social and political infrastructure that bring immense disruption and lingering uncertainty. Many of us are finding that the tasks before us feel heavier these days and our get up and go is buried under the bed covers.

Thankfully, you don’t need to wait until the next January 1st to catch another wave of the “can do” spirit. Every day is an opportunity to start fresh.

What you do need, however, is to know your WHY, your reason to bother with it all in the first place. It’s when the work is harder, longer, more confusing, less gratifying, or when the body and brain are tired and depleted that knowing your WHY becomes your most important resource.

Take some time to reflect on this.

WHY do you want your business to be successful?

An answer we often hear to this question is to make a lot of money. But making money is not a reason, it’s a result. Your WHY refers to your purpose, cause, or belief. It’s the reason you get up in the morning

WHY do you want to make a lot of money? What purpose does this serve? What will you do with your money?

WHY are you in the business you are in? People make a living selling everything from computers to cat costumes. WHY does your company exist?

If you considered these questions before, good for you! Take some time to revisit them and notice if anything has changed. Ask yourself “WHY does it matter right now, at this moment?”

As you reflect on these questions, be sure to adopt a spirit of nonjudgmental curiosity. Remember that there is no right or wrong answer except the one that speaks your truth. And that truth is where you will find your power, motivation and an endless source of renewal.

We want to hear from you! Tell us your WHY. Your answers could inspire others.

We’ll start it off by sharing ours.
