In our last blog we talked about how leaders can build happy workplaces where everyone thrives. As important as this is, it is equally important for each of us to assess our individual workplace happiness.
Because we spend so much time at work, it is an essential aspect of our well-being. Once we enter our professional lives, we may be so busy working, that we forget to periodically evaluate our work satisfaction. Reflecting on our relationship with work is one of the habits that sustains long term happiness. We are going to provide some ready to use tools that will make this type of contemplation easier.
The University of California at Berkeley's Greater Good Center has developed a variety of resources to support general happiness. Since 2001, they have been studying ”the roots of happy and compassionate individuals, strong social bonds, and altruistic behavior—the science of a meaningful life”. The workplace has been one of the places where they have turned their lens.
They have a quiz that is a great place to start to assess your professional happiness. It is aptly named the Happiness at Work Quiz.
It is grounded in research and measures various aspects of happiness while you are on the clock. Along with your results, they provide suggestions to improve your workplace happiness. For those in leadership, they give additional ideas to support employee job satisfaction.
If your quiz results suggest some changes, the Greater Good Center has a tool that walks you through a process to gain more satisfaction from your work life. Check out our next blog to see how.
